Portlaoise man stole battery from tractor to put into his own

A Portlaoise man has been given a four-month prison sentence having been convicted of stealing the battery from a tractor.

Before last week’s district court in Portlaoise was Sean Coss, with an address listed at 4 Hepburn Court, Ballyfin Road, Portlaoise. He was charged with burglary at The Heath on January 22 this year.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that a tractor was tampered with and diesel and the battery were taken. Coss was later arrested and admitted the offence.

Coss has 76 previous convictions, and is currently serving a sentence with a release date of January 29, 2014.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted this was a serious matter. She said that the battery had been removed from a tractor in an open shed, and put into another tractor so Coss could feed his stock. She pointed out there was no break-in at the yard.

Ms Fitzpatrick went on to say that her client had made full admissions when arrested.

“There is no parental figure in his life,” said defence.

Judge Catherine Staines ruled as outlined.
