The funniest floats in the Portlaoise St Patrick’s Day parade scooped top prizes in the awards ceremony last Friday in the parish centre.

Best Overall prize went to John Styles Fallen Animals, who had cows, horses, a vet, a farmer and a gorilla running riot in the parade. They received €300, a certificate and a plaque from parade organiser Ger Whelan.

Second prize was won by Mick Kerry from Portlaoise, who had carted along his bog woman, ‘discovered’ while cutting turf in Kyletalisha.

Third went to Tower Vintage Club, who featured a wooden shed as a NAMA affordable home. Both received €50 and a trophy.

Best Entertainers were the Congolese Womens’ Awareness group. Best school; Portlaoise weekend Latvian school. Best sporting; Ballyfin athletics club. Best business; Andy’s Furniture. Best band; Shanahoe school band, best dancers; Scoil Rince ní Dhuinn, best community group; Knockmay Combined Residents, best vintage; Ballyfin Vintage club. All received certs, while Grandmasters Portlaoise Panthers also got a plaque.
