A Mountmellick woman has been given the benefit of the probation act having been convicted of stealing a purse outside a local supermarket.
Joyce Hickey, 19 Emmet Street, Mountmellick, was charged with theft at the Supervalu car park, Connolly Street, Mountmellick, on March 29 this year.
Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that the injured party left her purse in a shopping trolley. Hickey took the purse, and was identified from CCTV.
She had no previous convictions.
“To say she’s not proud of her actions would be to grossly understate it,” said defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick. “She was distracted on the day by various responsibilities. She saw an opportunity and took the purse.”
Judge Staines ordered that €100 be handed over to the injured party.
