Portlaoise Gardaí were kept busy up to yesterday as Electric Picnic campers made their journey home, after the 11th and biggest picnic so far.
A busy day in court is also ahead for some 270 out of the 41,000 picknickers who were found with drugs.
Superintendent Joe Prendergast said most detections were for personal use, with some for sale or supply.
“We also had some crime, there were a number of people arrested for theft, about seven over the weekend,” he said.
It was a success from a Garda point of view he said.
“It went off smoothly but that was because a lot of attention was paid to detail. We were quite proactive,” he said.
There were about 120 Gardaí on duty each day from Friday to Monday, with extra brought in from Kildare.
“By and large the people attending were not too troublesome and easy to deal with, but there was a lot of work to be done,” the Supt said.
A revised traffic plan and a taxi rank “worked very well”, with most campers on site by 8pm Friday despite rain.
