The Minister for Health has still not revealed any decision on the future of Shaen Hospital, despite repeated requests from Portlaoise town councillors.
At last week’s town council meeting, Cllr Jerry Lodge called on the minister to clearly answer the question hanging over the hospital, and to stop ignoring the local authority as he has been doing for months.
“I had this down for the June meeting and there’s still no reply. We’re all agreed this is a matter of urgency, we should send an email to the minister,” said Cllr Lodge.
“Everyone should know what’s happening, it’s shameful he hasn’t responded,” said Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.
Cllr Caroline Dwane said they should also be informed about the future of Abbeyleix Hospital.
Mayor of Portlaoise, Cllr Willie Aird said that the HSE should also be contacted, although he remarked that perhaps the council were in danger of drawing unwelcome attention.
“Sometimes it’s better to keep your head down and say nothing,” he said.
“We’re all fearful of the answer,” added Cllr Kathleen O’Brien. “But we all need an answer.”
