A Lithuanian national who stole a woman’s blouse from a local shop was last week warned by Judge Catherine Staines that if she commits one more theft she could go to prison.
Before the district court in Portlaoise was Inga Mariene, Killganard, Ballylinan, charged with theft from Dunnes Stores, Kyle Shopping Centre, on February 19 this year.
Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that the defendant stole a black blouse worth €12. She was intercepted by security staff at the store and arrested.
She has one previous conviction for assault, in 2007.
Defence, Mr Philip Meagher explained that his client works as a cleaner earning €150 a week. She went through a temporary separation from her husband at the time and was having a difficult time financially.
“She was somewhat distracted,” said Mr Meagher. “In a state of upset she put the item into her basket and left, but she did have the money on her. The blouse was not damaged.”
Judge Staines applied the probation act, and warned Mariene she could go to prison if she steals again.
