Stole petrol from four filling stations

An Offaly woman who drove off without paying for petrol on four separate occasions was last week ordered to pay compensation and keep all her probation appointments to avoid going to prison.

Danielle Cronin, Cloghan Hill, Cloghan, Offaly, was charged with thefts including one from Mace, Tullamore Road, Mountmellick, and two thefts from Rosecourt Filling Station, Cooltaderry, Portarlington.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that Cronin got various amounts of petrol and drove off without paying.

She had eight previous convictions, including no insurance and drink driving.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted her client was at risk of a custodial sentence, having taken a total of €250 petrol from four separate filling stations.

Ms Fitzpatrick said Cronin had been travelling back and forth between Dublin and Offaly as she was caring for her grandmother.

“She didn’t have the money to fill the car, so she foolishly took the petrol,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.

“She stole the petrol,” corrected Judge Catherine Staines.

The judge put the matter back to September 11 for a probation report, and told Cronin to have €250 compensation. Judge Staines warned her to keep all her probation appointments, if she wanted to avoid a prison sentence.
