The skies o’er Ballyroan were extremely blue as the sun shone down on the annual School Sports Day on Friday June 13.
It was a celebration of fun, fitness and friendship as both Ballyroan National Schools (Scoil Bhride and Scoil Faolain Naofa) got together to compete and enjoy the day.
The children, aged from 5 to 12, participated in traditional races, including the sprint, the sack race, egg and spoon, obstacle course and 3-legged race, as well as a penalty shoot out and welly throwing competition.
To make the day extra special, the Parents Association had raised some additional funding to enable the children to try their hands at some more unusual fitness activities, including Taekwondo and Zumba. These were conducted by professional instructors Pat Bambrick (Taekwondo) and Suzanne from Zumba Laois, and added an additional element of excitement to what was already a fun-packed day.
Rosie O’Donnell, parent and chairwoman of the Parents Association commented, “You can see that the kids take their sport very seriously! You should have seen how high that welly went in the welly throwing competition! It has been a really successful day – great weather, great fun, and the main thing is that the kids had a fabulous time.”
All children received a medal for participating, as well as refreshments that were provided by kind sponsors and local businesses. The schools and Parents Association would very much like to thank Ryan’s Gala and Whelan’s Pub, Ballyroan and O’Donnell’s Pharmacy, Abbeyleix, as well as both fitness instructors, for making the day extra special.
