Theft of two sandwiches

A Portlaoise man who claimed he was homeless was last week charged with theft for stealing two sandwiches.

David Eremita, with an address listed at St Martha’s Hostel, Longford, committed the theft from Downeys, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on April 29.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that on that same date, Eremita was discovered in a very intoxicated state at Bridal Walk, Kilminchy, Portlaoise. He told the gardaí he was homeless and had nowhere to go.

Eremita had nine previous convictions, all for public order offences.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had been living rough at the time and was in “a pathetic state”.

“What do you do all day?” Judge Catherine Staines asked Eremita.

“I just sit around all day and do nothing,” he replied.

The case was put back to September 4 for a probation report.
