€1.2m to keep Laois bright

IT will cost Laois County Council €1.122 million to keep the county lit during 2013.

The council’s annual budget meeting heard that there were 6,000 public lights in 2009 and this has increased by 30% to 7,800. Some €935,000 was budgeted for lighting in 2012 but there was an overspend of €175,700 (total spent €1,110,700). The budget passed by councillors makes provision for €1.122m for public lighting (an increase of €11,300 of that spent during the previous twelve months).

County Manager Peter Carey said the running and maintenance costs of the county’s 7,800 public lights represent a significant cost burden.

“Initiatives to reduce costs include a new type of maintenance contract that incorporates energy savings as well as the provisioon of other energy saving methods.”

Cllr Tom Mulhall wondered if there was provision to supply lights in areas where there are none.
