€115k vase travelled to Dublin on bus

The buyer of a rare Chinese vase from Sheppard’s Auctioneers took it back to Dublin airport on the public bus.

So revealed auctioneer Philip Sheppard at last Thursday’s public meeting in Durrow, where strategies were planned to force a reversal of Bus Eireann’s sudden decision to end services to south Laois.

“The guy who bought it for €115,000 took the bus back to Dublin airport with his prize,” he said, adding that the underbidder who had travelled from Beijing, also used the bus to travel to the auction house in Durrow.

“People come regularly to do business by bus, and regularly from overseas to the airport. Today I had to advise a customer that our public service bus was too busy to pick up customers. We need our infrastructure, it’s the lifeblood of business,” he said.

Mr Sheppard said he and his schoolgoing children all used the service themselves, and agreed with Dep Sean Fleming’s declaration that the power lay with the people.

“We can withdraw power as quickly as we gave it to them, they need to be reminded of that,” he said.

Bus Eireann have changed their Route 8 schedule to run express from Cork to Dublin, effective from Sunday, June 24, cutting out Laois towns Durrow, Abbeyleix and Johnstown. The private company Aircoach also cut out all of their mid-journey stops earlier in the month.
