124 previous convictions
A PORTLAOISE man with 124 previous convictions appeared at last week’s district court on public order charges.
Thomas Conroy, 21 Lakeglen, Portlaoise, was charged with wilful obstruction on February 18, and disorderly conduct on February 7, at locations in Portlaoise.
Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Conroy caused a disturbance and general nuisance at Portlaoise Post Office on February 18, by obstructing people as they were going in and out.
Conroy was previously given a one-month suspended sentence at the December 20 court, for repeatedly drinking alcohol in the street at various locations in Portlaoise from October to December last year.
He was also out on bail appealing a ten-month sentence for burglary when he committed the latest offences.
As he was in breach of the suspended sentence, Judge Staines activated the one-month sentence.
“There were seven charges on the sheet on December 20, he had 118 previous convictions, I gave him an opportunity and he breached the sentence, I’m going to impose it,” said Judge Staines.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that the offences were “drink related”. She told the court that following the break down of a relationship, Conroy had been “back causing a nuisance on the streets”.
Ms Fitzpatrick concluded by saying that Conroy is due before the circuit court in April.
The judge reiterated that Conroy had breached a suspended sentence and she imposed the month’s sentence. She also fixed recognizance for Conroy to appeal the sentence.
Conroy posted bail on his own cash bond of €100 with an independent surety of €100 and was released.
