24 hour Garda cover request

Mountmellick Town Councillor Stephen Lynch has requested the same Garda cover for Mountmellick as Portarlington currently has.

“There is 24 hour Garda cover in Port, the station is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 1pm and 8pm to 9pm. Can it not be opened in Mountmellick the same, so people will be aware (when they can call)?” he requested at last Thursday’s JPC meeting.

Chief Inspector John Scanlon told him it was a matter for Sgt Ingrid Moore to decide in a private meeting.

Inspector Martin Harrington said Port had extended opening hours in light of “a very serious incident”.

“In recent times it was opened 24 hours to get witnesses,” he explained.
