40 years a GAA chairman

“Don’t worry about the critics, they are usually found amongst the members who do nothing,” said Mr Lar Brady, replying on his re-election for the 40th year as Chairman of Laois GAA County Board. He thanked the delegates and supporters for their continued confidence in him.
“You are doing a noble task,” he told the 125 delegates. He expressed the hope that the facilities put at the disposal of players by the County Board would be more fully utilised and that they would inspire, by their example, “the youth of Laois to play our national pastimes and to remain faithful to all that is best in the Irish traditional way of life.”
Mr Brady said the Gaels of Laois had manifested an extraordinary confidece and goodwill in his leadership. He promised that, as in the past, he would do his utmost to prove worthy of such trust.
GAA a ‘cockshot’
Very Rev. P. Maher, PP, Emo, re-elected Vice-Chairman of the County Board, said the Association had become a cockshot for all who did not agree with its ideals. By that virtue it had been put up on a pedestal supreme. The GAA had often to put up with a barrage of criticism; that in itself was a good thing because it showed up the position they held in the country. “We look at it that way,” said Fr Maher.
Clubs
Mr Ted Laffey, Secretary Laois Football Board, was unanimously elected Chairman of Mountmellick GAA Club, to succeed the late Mr James Scully to whom many tributes were paid. Mr Joseph Phelan was elected Chairman of Borris-in-Ossory Hurling Club. Mr John Joe McEvoy was elected Chairman of Kilcavan GAA Club.
