€50,000 crossing plan in Stradbally
County hall has received cash to study how pedestrian crossings on one of the busiest road in Laois can be improved but with no guarantee of money to install new crossings.
The National Roads Authority has given Laois County Council €50,000 to examine how pedestrian crossings can be improved in Stradbally, which has the busy N80 as its Main Street.
Cllr James Deegan welcomed the money, announced at the recent Emo area council meeting by Senior Engineer Orla Barrett. He was particularly concerned about the crossing at Market Square, which he says is a threat to motorists and pedestrians.
“It deserves to be moved down further, down the town not up. On the point of the hill lorries find it hard to stop,” he said.
Cllr Tom Mulhall suggested “raised table” crossings to further slow the traffic.
“Traffic goes fairly fast through Stradbally, there has been a few accidents. There are three pedestrian crossings, people are depending on motorists to obey the lights, it is an issue,” he said.
More money is needed once a design report is complete, to pay for the cost of recommended works, according to the council engineer.
