‘Arrogant’ road works claim
roadworks for the NRA at Emmett Street were carried out in an “arrogant” way, claimed Cllr Ollie Payne at Mountmellick Town Council monthly meeting last Thursday night.
He elucidated: “My complaint was about their attitude. There was no traffic control. They showed no respect for residents or business people.”
Cllr Marc Connolly: “I cannot understand why the work was not done at nighttime.” He and Cllr Paddy Bracken complained about the length of time it took to complete the contract and about the loss of trade it had entailed for a local business person.
Chairman Pat Bowe: “It’s completely ridiculous what happened down there.”
Cllr Stephen Lynch: “It’s scandalous the way the work was done during the day. That’s the main road to the west.”
Cllr Bobby Delaney believed there should be a rates waiver for the business person.
Executive Engineer Dermot Leonard explained that the road had to be closed because of the nature of the work. And, he added, the noise of the machinery used would have made night operations unpleasant for nearby residents.
