Bans and big fines for motorists

BIG FINES and driving bans were handed out to motorists for driving without insurance at Portlaoise District Court last week.

Keith Garry, 42 Kirwan Park, Mountmellick was disqualified for two years and fined n2,000 for having no insurance on October 14 last year when stopped on the Dublin Road, Portlaoise. He was fined n300 for not producing his insurance cert and n300 for not wearing a safety belt

Nicola Mulhall, 54 Lakeside Gardens, Kilminchy, Portlaoise was banned for two years and fined n2,000 for having no insurance when stopped on the town's Dublin Road on November 6 last year. A further n1,200 was imposed for drivers licence, insurance and mobile phone offences.

A bench warrant was issued for Edward O'Shea of 381 Maryborough, Portlaoise who had no insurance, drivers licence or NCT when stopped on December 22 last year at O'Moore Place. Garda Grace Heffernan said he had two previous convictions for no insurance and drink driving.

The biggest penalty was handed down to David Broderick of 217 Bunting Road, Walkinstown, Dublin 12. He was fined n4,800 and banned for four years after being stopped on the Dublin Road, Portlaoise on November 10 last year. Apart from no insurance, he was driving while on a mobile phone, without a licence or certificate of road worthiness on his vehicle.
