‘Bedlam’ on Portlaoise orbital route
“IT’S not a case that it would be nice to have it; it’s a case that we have to have it,” said Cllr Matthew Keegan, speaking about a missing link on the southern orbital route in Portlaoise which is needed before the opening of the town’s new schools.
Cllr Keegan raised the issue at last week’s Portlaoise Town Council meeting, where he described it as “a necessity rather than a priority” for the road to be completed to deal with approximately 2,000 primary school children.
Cllr Willie Aird said there would be huge pressure from the top of the Stradbally Road which would cause a major bottleneck. Cllr Alan Hand added that there would be a lot of traffic in the area, while Cllr Caroline Dwane said there would really be a problem on the Block Road.
Mayor, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said that the road was a priority and money would have to be found.
“It’s going to be bedlam up there whenever the schools open,” she said.
A response from PJ Dempsey, senior executive engineer with the roads department, said there is no source of available funding, at this time.
