Bench warrant issued for cannabis grower

A BENCH warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Chinese national accused of operating a major cannabis growhouse who failed to appear at last week’s court.

Xia Hong Wang, of no fixed abode, is charged with the cultivation of cannabis plants and possesion of the drug for sale in excess of €13,000. Wang previously appeared in Cloverhill district court on July 25, where he was released on bail with a cash lodgement of €5,000 to appear back before last week’s Portlaoise district court. Conditions of the bail were that he must reside at an address in Lucan, he must not apply for a passport from the Chinese embassy and he must sign on daily at the garda station.

At last week’s court, defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had not signed on since August 2.

“He’s been off the radar since,” Mr Meagher admitted.
