Big turnout for Triple P

More than 300 parents turned up in Portlaoise and Tullamore for the first seminar of the Triple P Parenting Programme, which the Laois/Offaly Parenting Partnership have launched to families of children aged 7 years of age and younger throughout the two counties.

Professor Matt Sanders, the Australian founder of the programme delivered the first seminar, in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise recently.

Speaking at the launch Catherine Cowap, Laois Partnership said “We are delighted to be part of the Laois Offaly Parenting Partnership to deliver this evidence based parenting programme to parents. This programme will be very worthwhile to our clients. Parenting and education is essential for building strong resilient communities.”

“We know that parenting is crucial to how a child develops and can have an impact that extends far beyond the family home,” added Catherine.

A significant number of practitioners – including Public Health Nurses, Family Support Workers, Childcare Leaders, Community Mother Volunteers, Community Development Workers and partner facilitators – have already been trained and accredited to deliver Triple P to parents. It has been funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies, the HSE, the Child and Family Support Agency and The Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

The Programme Director, Conor Owens, said they wanted wanted to make it as easy as possible to use Triple P.

“We’re trying to making it as easy as possible for parents to get Triple P because this is for all parents with children aged 7 yrs and under.”

There will be more public Triple P seminars, group programmes and small group discussion’s available throughout the year.

At the launch, the programme founder, Professor Matt Sanders said there was a variety of programs available, depending on parents’ and childrens’ needs.

“There is no one right way to be a parent, but Triple P offers information, support and practical answers to everyday parenting concerns.

“A variety of programs are available, depending on parents’ and children’s needs,” he said.
