Borris Rd may not open until October
IT could be as late as mid-October before Laois County Council have completed the half million euro construction works on the Borris Road in Portlaoise, which have caused huge traffic build ups in the area and frustrated many parents trying to access the nearby schools.
In last week’s Leinster Express, we reported that the council had promised to complete the works by the end of September. However, in a statement on the council’s website, it is outlined that there is a road closure in place until the middle of October, although the council “may” be in a position to reopen the road before then.
The statement claims that the works, which commenced in early August, are proceeding on schedule, and include a major bridge culvert and the laying of 250m of new road, cycle and foot paths, as well as fencing, landscaping and accommodation works.
“A road closure is in place till mid-October. It is anticipated that we may be in a position to re-open the road in advance of this date,” the statement reads. “The schedule will be under continuous review as (the) project progresses and we will keep you updated.”
The council also claim that it was not possible to commence the works earlier, due to staffing levels, the adverse weather and “serious financial challenges”. It was also suggested that the closure of Colliers Lane for roadworks a few months earlier prevented the closure of the Borris Road at same time.
“Laois County Council apologises for the disruption caused and will make every effort to ensure that the works are completed as quickly as possible,” the statement concludes.
