Bouncer given black eye at Port night club
A TULLAMORE man who punched a doorman at a Portarlington night club has been given community service and ordered by Judge Catherine Staines to stop drinking to save up compensation.
Keith Kirwan, of Bogtown, Cloneygowan, Tullamore, was charged with assault at the East End Hotel, Main Street, Port, on March 11 last year.
Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Kirwan was refused entry to the night club and so struck the doorman, leaving him with a black eye.
Kirwan has one previous conviction for assault.
Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said that his client’s recollection of the incident was very hazy, as he had taken a lot of drink. Kirwan had been out with another man and both were refused entry as they were so drunk, but Kirwan went away and 40 minutes later thought he was now sober enough to re-attend the club. He was told to go away by the doorman and one word led to another, before one blow was struck.
Mr Meagher said Kirwan is on social welfare and pays €50 a week at home for his upkeep.
Judge Staines imposed 200 hours’ community service in lieu of six months in prison. She also ordered Kirwan to pay €500 compensation and advised him to stop drinking and save €100 a week.
“If he doesn’t co-operate or if there’s no compensation, I will impose the sentence,” said the judge.
The matter was put back to April 4.
