Boy racers at 'all hours'

COULD an initiative to deal with boy racers be introduced in Laois? asked Cllr Paul Mitchell at a County Joint Policing Committee meeting recently.

The Portarlington councillor said half of all road deaths involved persons in the 16 to 30 age group.

Cllr Tom Mulhall said some housing estates were having huge problems with two or three cars "going round all hours of the morning."

Cllr Mary Sweeney suggested emphasing the road safety message to transition year students.

Earlier, Supt Philip Lyons, Portlaoise, had said that up to the end of August road fatalaties in Laois had increased by 60 per cent. The Portlaoise district had seven, while Abbeyleix had one.

In reply to Cllr Mitchell, he said the traffic corps under Garda Sgt Redmond Coady had acquired machines for measuring engine decibel levels and tinted vehicle windows.
