Brothers’ fight spilled into street
A FIGHT between three brothers on a bus which spilled out onto a public road landed all three before last week’s district court on public order charges.
Brendan McInerney (30), of 32 Highfield Meadows, Portlaoise; Patrick McInerney (32), of 376 Market Mews, Maryborough Village, Portlaoise; and Thomas McInerney (36), of 22 Twomey Park, Mountmellick, were all charged with being intoxicated in a public place. The offence was committed at Annamoe, Portarlington, on February 15 this year.
Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that gardaí received a call at midday from a taxi driver, who said that there were a number of people fighting in his vehicle on the way to Mountmellick. When the gardaí arrived they found the three defendants fighting in the middle of the road and pepper-spray had to be deployed.
Brendan McInerney has two previous convictions; Patrick McInerney has 13 previous convictions; and Thomas McInerney has five.
Defence for the men was Mr Philip Meagher. Mr Meagher explained that his clients had been attending a wedding in Portarlington on the day and an issue arose in the taxi bus afterwards. The driver stopped the bus as two of the brothers were fighting and things then got heated on the road.
Judge Staines ordered all three men to engage with the Athy Alternative Project for their alcohol issues and the matter was put back to June.
She said that she hoped they would receive some education on the abuse of alcohol through the completion of the Athy project.
The judge remarked that her main concern was for any children the men had, as fighting in the street was not a great example to set.
