Burglary blitz blights south Laois

GARDAÍ are investigating a burglary blitz that blighted south Laois and saw eleven raids take place inside a twelve-hour period.

Schools, a creche, private residences and business dwellings were all targeted last Tuesday and Wednesday with various items stolen including cash, lap tops, jewellery, TV’s, copper cyclinders and medicines.

Gardaí haven’t ruled out the fact that all the incidents are connected and carried out by the same gang.

The first reported burglary occurred at approximately 6pm last Tuesday (August 28) at Main Street, Abbeyleix where a house was ransacked and a lap top and medicines were stolen. A short time late a house at Da Vici Hill, Abbeyleix was ransacked and the intruders made away with a number of items of jewellery.

Damage was caused at a house on Durrow Road, Ballinakill after it was ransacked by raiders and at approximately 8pm on the Golf Club Road in Rathdowney, they forcibly entered a house and stole two copper cyclinders along with a bag of medicines. While at Conboro another house was broken into with the raiders getting their hands on medicine, cash and jewellery.

The national school at Ballinakill was broken into at 2.20am on Wednesday (August 29), while a small quantity of cash was taken after the raiders gained entry to Heywood Community School and this incident took place at approximately 2.45am.

There was an attempted break-in at a store in Crettyard and a creche was also targeted in Timahoe.

And some time between the close of business on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning there was evidence of two further break-in’s at Abbeyleix. A home supplies store on Market Square was entered and damage was caused, while a small amount of cash was stoled from a a licensed premises nearby.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, at approximately 10.15pm on Thursday, August 30, three intruders believed to be aged in their 20’s entered a a private house at Cullahill and when they were disturbed by the home owners they fled, travelling in the direction of Durrow.

Also on August 30/31, private residences were broken into at Ballickmoyler and at Springhill, Killeshin where the raiders made off with a lap top and TV.
