Car ‘burst into flames’

A ROAD safety review is needed at Forest Park in Portlaoise following two recent traffic collisions, according to Cllr Alan Hand.

Cllr Hand told the town council that there is a recent history of road accident, the last of which was very serious and damagedproperty.

Cllr Hand said a car crashed into a tree and burst into flames, which destroyed hedging in the area.

“There’s a need for metal bollards there. The old tree has been removed and that tree was a buffer that prevented the car from going into the garden.”

Cllr Hand said that something is needed to improve safety conditions as there are children playing near the road.

“That’s a straight road broken by speed ramps, but the design is completely wrong, it doesn’t slow you down,” he said.

In a reply from PJ Dempsey of the roads department it was said that a review will be carried out, but it unlikely that this location will be improved due to lack of funding.
