Carelessly driving on Portlaoise graves

PEOPLE are ‘carelessly driving on graves’ in St Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.

Cllr Jerry Lodge told a meeting of the Portlaoise Electoral Area committee at county hall that it was a matter of urgency to prohibit driving on graves and that the Council takes any reasonable steps they can to tackle the problem.

Mary Donoghue, Administrative Officer Water Services, said the erection of bollards will be included as a priority in the works which are scheduled to commence in January 2013.

She pointed out that the extent of the works ‘has still to be finalised’.

Ms Donoghue added: “It was expected that this work would commence before the end of the year, however, the wet weather has delayed works.”

Cllr Lodge said he was very pleased with the reply.

Portlaoise’s Mayor Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald spoke of the need to show respect to those laid to rest at the cemetery and their relatives.
