‘Cart before horse’ on car insurance

A PORTLAOISE man convicted of driving without a licence or insurance who claimed he had just bought the car when he was stopped by gardaí was among the people convicted of motoring offences at last week’s court.
John Dunne, of Colliers Lane, Kilminchy, committed the offence at Cappakeel, Portlaoise, on June 5 last year.
He has 41 previous convictions, two of which are for no insurance.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client had put the cart before the horse, by buying the car in Kildare for €400 and driving it home.
Ms Fitzpatrick said that Dunne is no longer driving and has secured a place at Coote Street in Portlaoise for drug addiction.
Judge Catherine Staines put the matter back for sentencing to February 7 and disqualified him from driving for four years.
Also before the court was Peter Kelly, 149 The Hermitage, Portlaoise, who was charged with non display of tax disc, at Ballydavis, Portlaoise, on May 9 last year. He failed to appear at last week’s court and was fined in his absence €300.
Gary Dunne, 7 Hawthorne Drive, Portlaoise, was fined €150 for no NCT and €200 for no tax disc, at Townspark, Borris in Ossory, on May 19.
Graham Curtis, 4 The Meadow, Graigavern Lodge, Ballybrittas, was fined €300 for non display of tax disc, at Cappakeel, Portlaoise, on June 5.
Brian Dunne, Kilcotton, Borris-in-Ossory, was fined €300 for non display of tax disc, at Conoboro, Rathdowney, on June 15.
Michael Nolan, Kilbreedy, Rathdowney, was also fined €300 for non display of tax disc, at Conoboro, Rathdowny, on June 15.
Mark Tynan, Boley, Abbeyleix, was fined €150 for not wearing a seat belt, at Market Square, Abbeyleix, on June 16 last year.
Mark O’Meara, 17 Kirwan Park, Mountmellick, was fined €150 for not wearing a seat belt, at Patrick Street, Mountmellick, on June 29.
Roger Foot, Skerry, Rosenallis, was fined €150 for no NCT, at Clonad, Portlaoise, on May 15.
James McCann, Cush, Clonaslee, was fined €150 for no certificate of road worthiness, at Carn, Mountmellick, on June 25.
Malcolm Akerlind, Hillview House, Garrymaddock, Vicarstown, was fined €150 for no NCT, at Carn, Mountmellick, on June 25.
Valeriy Maximov, 8 Beech Grove, Mountmellick, was fined €300 for no insurance, at Ballydavis, Portlaoise, on July 5.
Ciaran Sweeney, 24 Parnell Crescent, Portlaoise, was fined €300 for non display of tax disc, at Deerpark, Port, on April 23.
