Celebration time for Port FETAC award recipients

THE clients and staff of Oak House, Portarlington were joined by members of the local Lions Club last Wednesday evening for a very successful FETAC Level 3 Awards presentation ceremony.
Nineteen very proud clients, who studied diligently over the past two years under the stewardship of Oak House staff, accepted their certificates from Port Lions Club President Willie Murphy.
The recipients excelled in five different modules - Art & Design and Computer Literacy (Catherine Phelan was tutor for both), Horticulture (tutor Jacinta Daly), Drama (tutor Denise Whelan) and Preparation for Work (Sheila Brereton).
Oak House Manager Pauline Magee extended warm congratulations to the award recipients and she also made a presentation to Jack Kenny, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
Jack is a long time volunteer and friend of Oak House and is actively involved with the Parents & Friends Committee of Oak House.
Ms Magee thanked Lions Club President Willie Murphy, former President Barry Lampkin and their fellow Lions for attending and she also praised their fantastic support of the work of Oak House, an association that extends back to 2008 when the Lions presented them with a specially adapted seven-seat vehicle following a fund-raiser at Newbridge Greyhound Track that yielded €40,000.
“More recently the Lions presented us with a top of the range laser jet printer and it has been of enormous benefit and we are extremely grateful for their generosity,” concluded Ms Magee.
Lions President Willie Murphy praised the ‘exceptional work’ of Oak House staff and added that both he and Mr Lampkin would ‘cherish for life’ the clocks, hand-made by the clients, that they were presented with.
Mr Murphy revealed that he holds Oak House ‘close to his heart’ as he was born in his grandfather’s house directly opposite the premises and he said the Lions, whose membership has grown by 123% and now boasts four ‘Lionesses’, are delighted to have been able to assist Oak House.
Mr Murphy said the Lions were at the heart of an ever expanding and vibrant town of Portarlington and he outlined that they’ve plans to hold a Family Fun Day on Sunday, August 19 next.
