Clonaslee man attacked car with axe after smashing up his mother’s home

A CLONASLEE man who smashed up his own mother’s house before he attacked her boyfriend’s car with an axe appeared before last week’s district court, where he was remanded on bail with conditions that he must sign on daily at the garda station and observe a strict curfew.

Daniel McManus, currently residing at a hostel in Tullamore, was charged with breaching a barring or safety order at his mother’s house at Coolagh, Clonaslee, on November 5 last year. At last week’s court, new charges were brought against McManus by Garda Michael Greaney.

Inspector Martin Harrington outlined the facts of the case. On November 5, gardaí responded to a call to attend at the home of McManus’ mother, who reported that her son was smashing up the house. During the incident, McManus smashed the patio door of the kitchen, before he struck his mother’s boyfriend’s car with an axe. He was also observed with a knife in his hand.

The court heard that the damage to the door was €290, while the damage to the car was €430.

The matter was put back to January 17, with McManus remanded on continual bail. Conditions of his bail are that he must reside in Tullamore, he must sign on daily at the Tullamore Garda Station and he must adhere to a curfew of 8pm to 7am.
