Community service for ‘professional thief’
A “PROFESSIONAL thief” was ordered to engage with community services and probation at the recent Portlaoise Circuit Court, with Judge Tony Hunt remarking he was almost afraid to send her to the probation service for fear something might go missing from their office.
Mother of seven, Vandana Rezmives was stopped in a vehicle at James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise, on April 26 last year. She was found to have €410 of stolen menswear items and €225.24 of goods stolen from Kilminchy Pharmacy. At a subsequent sitting of the District Court, she was given a three-month sentence for the offences.
Garda Sgt James Phelan told the Circuit Court that Rezmives has 17 previous convictions and has appeared at various courts around the country.
“This is a habitual, professional thief,” remarked Judge Hunt.
Defence for Rezmives, Mr McCoy said his client had been in the company of others on the day and she was not the ring-leader. Mr McCoy said that some of Rezmives’ children have medical difficulties and she was throwing herself on the mercy of the court. Mr McCoy asked Judge Hunt to perhaps involve the probation service.
“I’m afraid to send her to probation for fear something goes missing from their office,” the judge said.
Defence suggested that Rezmives’ cultural background was a factor in her offending. Judge Hunt replied that race has nothing to do with shoplifting.
“If you elect to live here, the deal is you sign up to the rules if you want to play the game,” Judge Hunt stated, before saying he was hesitant to jail someone without exploring all options.
Remarking that Rezmives has very little going for her, Judge Hunt put the matter back to October 26 for a probation and community service report.
“She’s on the cusp of going to jail,” he said. “If she thieves so much as a sticking plaster between now and then that’s the end of it. It’ll be for more than three months,” he warned.
