Community service for shampoo thief

A PORTLAOISE woman who stole what defence described as “necessities” from a local shop was last week given community service in lieu of prison.

Amy O’Shea, 61 O’Moore Place, Portlaoise, was charged with theft from Tesco, Portlaoise, on June 5. She has 20 previous convictions, ten of which are for theft.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick, said that her client had taken goods worth around €40, “necessities” such as shampoo and various items.

“She’s putting the custody of her little son in jeopardy,” admitted Ms Fitzpatrick. “She’s not proud of her actions. There are no drink or drugs issues, but there are difficulties with money.”

O’Shea was given 150 hours’ community service in lieu of six months in prison and the matter was put back to September 13.
