Compensate for burning
A PORTLAOISE man convicted of setting fire to two sheds in a local housing estate has been given another chance to pay compensation.
John Lewis, with an address at 98 St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise, pleaded guilty at the October Circuit Court to two counts of criminal damage, at St Brigid’s Place on February 11, 2011.
His case was adjourned for Lewis to gather up compensation, and submit to urine analysis and the supervision of the probation service.
At last week’s sitting of the Circuit Court, defence said that Lewis’ social welfare had been suspended four weeks after the October court, which meant he did not have any compensation saved. Defence asked Judge Tony Hunt for a long adjournment, to allow Lewis to gather up “a significant amount”.
“If I put it back for a longish time, it tends not to concentrate the mind,” saidd Judge Hunt.
“His mind is quite concentrated,” replied defence.
“I want to get these people money,” said the judge.
Lewis was remanded on continual bail to April 23.
