Council review of school speed limit

SPEED limits that apply only during school hours may be on the way for Laois schools on busy roads.

An upcoming Speed Limit review by Laois Countycouncil’s Road’s Department will consider periodic speed limits for schools such as The Rock NS near Mountmellick, which sits next to the busy R422. The 30kph limit, this would only be in place during school hours and revert to 50 or 60kph at weekends or school holidays.

Cllr Tom Mulhall called for the council to consider the idea at last week’s county council meeting.

“I’m sure there are a number of schools like The Rock. Outside school hours I would like to see it go back to 50kph,” he said.

Cllr Alan Hand supported the suggestion.

“The last thing we need is a fatality. There have been a number of near misses,” he said.

The council replied that the issue will be considered during their review, planned for late this year, or early 2013.
