Councillors’ drug concerns
GARDAÍ were recently questioned by councillors about their knowledge of drug trafficing in the county.
“Regarding drug trafficking, I’m sure there are a number of sites around where drugs are exhanged. Are the Gardaí familiar with these sites?”, Councillor Tom Mulhall asked at the recent Laois Joint Policing Committee meeting.
Councillor Paul Mitchell noted that the number of cases of possession of drugs for personal use is down from 190 in the third quarter of last year to 64 in the third quarter of this year. “Are they getting better at hiding them? Young people are given the chance to get off drugs in other counties. We need to look after our own people in Laois”, he said.
Councillor Ben Brennan said: “it is hard to believe that drugs crime has gone down but I feel it’s worse in some areas”.
They were told by Chief Superintendent John Scanlon that it is important to tell local Gardaí of any issues.
“Raising the issue here is fine, but it is sometimes more useful if you talk to the people on the ground. The stastics have very little to do with the people of Laois. With drugs in the prison environment and at major concerts, the figures can be skewed. We are interested in capturing people involved with drugs, I can tell you that”.
