CT Scanner to open 24 hours
The CT Scanner at Portlaoise Hospital is set to become a 24 hour service in the coming months.
Since the scanner was installed in Portlaoise, it has opened on a 9 to 5 basis. With many campaigns, by local people and politicians over the years to see it opened all the time.
Extending the hours of the CT was listed as a priority for the HSE in their National Service Plan for 2013, the only mention of any Laois healthcare facility or service in the document.
Although no definitive date has been set to extend the opening hours, the HSE envisage that it will be with in the next 2-3 months.
“The Hospital have completed the documentation and are currently working on the recruitment of the relevant staffing levels to progress the provision of CT Scanning out of hours. As soon as qualified staff are employed, the service will commence. It is envisaged that this will be in the next 2-3 months,” A HSE spokesperson said.
In an interview with the Leinster Express in 2008, the then head of the HSE, Professor Brendan Drumm said the expense of extending the opening hours of the CR was enormous while the demand was low. He said it was impossible to provide a 24/7 CT service on all sites.
“In the Midlands where you have four hospitals covering a small area, there is no way that it could be justified because the numbers who need the service are very low,” he said at the time.
