Cuts hit teaching in Laois
A Laois teacher’s union representative has accused the government of “casualising the teaching profession” with the new pay agreement.
“It’s not our fault, but who else is doing work for free,” Mary Higgins of the Laois Teachers Union of Ireland.
“Some people are being firced to retire early to ensure their enhanced pension, all the expertise is being forced out and they are not being replaced by permanent staff. These people that are being forced into early retirement are a big loss and it is a further casualisation of the teaching profession.
“We’re also being expected to do two and a quarter hours supervision per week for free,” she said.
Ms Higgins said that teachers were also feaful of what was ahead of them.
“Teachers are worried about what is down the road with Croke Park 2. They were told in Croke Park 1, that there would be no pay cuts. Members are worried that in further agreemens they will stop the payment for correcting exams.”
The TUI rep said that ultimately the students will suffer as a result of what the government are proposing.
“A lot of the essential admin work won’t done as a result and ultimately the students will be suffering.”
