Disease found in Laois Ash trees
eradication work is underway to rid Laois of the disease which threatens to wipe out Ash trees after the disease was detected in Laois.
Minister for Agriculture, Food Deputy Simon Coveney confirmed to Barry Cowen TD that there have been incidents of the disease in forest plantations in Counties Laois, Leitrim, Meath, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Waterford, Carlow, Kildare, Longford and Galway.
“To address the threat to our ash woodlands, there will be a major eradication programme on sites where there are ash trees from confirmed positive imported consignments,” said the Minster.
Minister Coveney said his department would supervse the destruction and re-establishment of these sites. He said a re-establishment grant will be made available to the owners of private plantations which are part of the Department’s current afforestation programme. He said the intensive winter surveys will continue until a full picture has been obtained.
