Drink driver had heavy night

A MAN detected with alcohol on his breath who drove home from the doctor’s the morning after a heavy night’s drinking was one of several people to be convicted of motoring offences at last week’s District Court.

Sigitas Zabitis, with an address at Ballymanus House, Vicarstown, was caught with 48mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, at the Dublin Road, Portlaoise on May 8.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said his client had been drinking heavily the night before and was returning from a doctor’s surgery the following morning when he was detected.

Zabitis was fined €300 and disqualified from driving for two years, with the disqualification postponed until November 1.

Also before the court was Eric Paul Dempsey, The Rock, Mountmellick, who was fined €150 for not having a tax disc displayed on his car, at the Old Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on December 1 last year.

Michael McInerney, 60 DeVesci Court, Fairgreen Estate, Portlaoise, was fined €150 for non display of disc, at the Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, on December 10.

Kenneth Roche, 24 The Oaks, Kilnacourt, Portarlington, was charged with having no driving licence or insurance, at Kilnacourt on June 2 last year. He was fined a total of €500 and disqualified from driving for two years.

The following people were charged with speeding: Raymond Goode, Aughafan, Castletown (fined €200); Damien Carter, Church Street, Ballinakill (fined €100); Mark Fox, 10F The Swan, Wolfhill (€100 charitable donation, no conviction); Sinead Hennessy, Kyle, Ballaghmore, Borris-in-Ossory (€100 charitable donation, no conviction); Muhammad Hafeez, Kebab Palace, Patrick Street, Mountrath (fined €100); Ronan Purcell, Upper Main Street, Abbeyleix (fined €200).
