Drop in patients on trollies

The number of people waiting for beds at Portlaoise Hospital, has dropped dramatically this year compared to other years.

The Trolley Count of 56 for January 2013 represents a considerable improvement over a two year period compared with January 2011 when the figure was 135. This is an improvement of almost 60%.

Figures show that 531 patients were on Trolleys in Portlaoise Regional Hospital over the year 2012 compared with 1,926 in 2011.

On Monday (February 18), there was just one person waiting for a bed, compared with nine people last year.

Fine Gael TD, Charlie Flanagan has complimented management and staff at Portlaoise Midland Regional Hospital following the publication of the recent Trolley Count figures.

“I am fully aware that reforms in the Health System are complex and slow. However, these figures for Portlaoise clearly show that reforms are working.”

“The Health Service is about treatment of patients and those who are ill. Patients must take priority over any vested interests. I very much welcome these improved figures for Laois and I look forward to continued progress in Health Care for the people of Laois in 2013 and beyond,” he said.

Early last year a number of initiatives were introduced in Portlaoise to reduce the number of people waiting on trollies to be admitted to the hospital. These included ward rounds every morning, beginning at 8am and the co-ordinated discharge of patients over the weekends
