Effort to get on straight and narrow

A PORTLAOISE man who stole petrol from a filling station and was detected in possession of a stolen trailer has to make “a great effort to get on the straight and narrow” before he next appears in court.

Sean Coss, 4 Hepburn Court, Ballyfin Road, Portlaoise, was charged with theft from Downeys Centra, Portlaoise, on July 21. Inspector Martin Harrington said the total loss to the filling station was €81.75.

Coss was also charged with being in possession of stolen property, at Rossdarragh, Portlaoise, on May 3. The inspector said that Coss was observed pulling a stolen trailer on the back of his car and when questioned by gardaí he admitted that it wasn’t his.

Coss has 70 previous convictions.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that Coss had seen the trailer parked up at a vacant property so he took it without permission to help his friend move house.

“He will have to make a great effort to get on the straight and narrow,” admitted Ms Fitzpatrick.

Coss was ordered to pay €100 compensation and Judge Staines put the matter back to October 4 before deciding on sentencing.
