‘Extremely dangerous’ Abbeyleix road

A ROAD in Abbeyleix has been identified by local councillors as needing “urgent repair before a major tradegy takes place”.

Councillor John Joe Fennelly was speaking at the Borris in Ossory electoral area meeting recently and identified The Tiles on the Portlaoise Road in Abbeyleix, where he said children have to leave the footpath.

“One day there will be a child knocked down, it is extremely dangerous, it has to be done”.

Senior executive engineer Michael Malone said that the NRA have inspected the road and it is “actively being considered”. He said that he provided a representative from Abbeyleix Tidy Towns with a cost estimate and solution. He added that putting traffic lights there at the moment would mean closing a lane of traffic.

Cllr Marty Phelan was also anxious to see the repairs completed. “It is going on too long, and its too dangerous, you may do something”. He was told by Mr Malone that he would welcome any information on getting funding for the repairs.
