Fined for having shotgun shells
A MOUNTRATH man currently serving a sentence for drug offences has been fined for having possession of shotgun cartridges at his home.
A garda search of the house of Robert O’Rourke, at 12 St Fintan’s Terrace, Mountrath, on July 2 last year, revealed a box containing 25 shotgun cartridges.
Garda Inspector Martin Harrington told the district court that O’Rourke has 13 previous convictions and is currently serving an eight-month sentence for drugs offences.
Defence, Mr Philip Meagher explained that his client’s uncle, who had been a keen huntsman, had died the year previously and when his house was being cleared the family came across a shotgun and a box of cartridges. The shotgun was sold, but the cartridges were placed in a cupboard beside the cooker in O’Rourke’s house “out of harm’s way”.
O’Rourke was fined €300.
