Fined for unmuzzled pit-bull dog

AN unmuzzled pit-bull landed a Mountmellick man a €200 fine at last week’s Portlaoise District Court.

Declan Maher, 24 Cullen Wood, was observed walking the dog without a muzzle on Parnell Street, Mountmellick, on April 6.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said that there had been no incident with the dog, which was a half-breed, and his client had made sure to use the muzzle there after. He said that Maher was aware the dog had to be muzzled, but he just overlooked it on the day.

“These dogs can be very frightening to people, they’re bred for their aggressive nature,” remarked Judge Catherine Staines.

Maher replied that the dog had not been aggressive and he had since given up the animal some eight months ago.

Judge Staines ruled as outlined.
