Funding for Laois heritage projects

HERITAGE projects in the Midlands are set to benefit from an n11.5 million funding package announced by the Government, with Heywood Gardens in Laois one of those to benefit.

A total of n4.3 million is flagged to support state heritage properties in the midlands including Heywood Gardens, Cadamstown and Offaly's Clonmacnoise.

Almost a quarter of a million euro in grants for midland local authorities is also being flagged for conversation of protected structures with the local authorities being awarded n232,000 in grants for the conservation of protected structures.

Laois will benefit to the tune of n71,000 - Offaly is to receive n106,000 while Westmeath county council has been awarded n55,000.

Announcing the funding earlier this week, Environment Minister John Gormley said such investment is essential as it can bring economic benefits in the form of cultural tourism and employment.
