Garda station car parking

CONVERT the area outside the wall of the garda station in Portlaoise into car parking spaces, proposed Cllr Tom Jacob at the recent town council meeting.

“There’s quite an area there that could be changed,” he said. “I know of an old couple who had to make three or four runs from the tax office to the garda station, and in bad weather.”

Cllr Jacob suggested making the parking area pay and display, which would also help to increase revenue. Cllr Willie Aird said he didn’t agree with making it pay and display and he believed the additional parking spaces should only be for people who have business in the garda station.

A reply from the roads department said that as the area is a cul-de-sac, any form of a designed car park layout will require a turning bay. This would require that a minimum of two spaces be given over for the turning bay. In the interests of conserving spaces, it was felt that the current informal parking regime should be allowed to continue, as it appears to be operating reasonably effectively.

Mayor Catherine Fitzgerald promised that the matter would be included on the agenda for the next meeting of the parking bye-laws committee.
