Gardaí investigate spate of burglaries

GARDAÍ in Laois are urging property owners to be extra vigilant and to take all precautions possible in the wake of a spate of residential and business premises burglaries.

On Monday, August 13, a house was ransacked on the Stradbally Road, Portlaoise and a number of items stolen, while in the early hours of the morning a lap top was removed from a house on the Dublin Road in the town.

A licensed premises on Main Street, Portarlington was targeted by thieves on Monday night also, with two large flat screen televisions and a cigarette machine being taken during the raid.

Gardaí are also investigating burglaries that occurred during the middle of the past week in Stradbally, Rathdowney, Camross, Portlaoise and Mountmellick.

At 8.55am last Wednesday, a Mountmellick pharmacy was broken into however the raiders fled the scene after they were disturbed.

Homes were ransacked and personal belongings were stolen from four different properties at Clonboyne, Portlaoise; Glosha, Rathdowney; Badger Hill, Camross and Grange Upper, Stradbally.

While during the afternoon of Thursday, August 9 two neighbouring homes on Rathdowney’s Johnston Road were burgled.

And on Saturday last electrical items were stolen following a break-in at Silverwood, Mountmellick.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone that may have seen anything suspicious or may have information on any of these incidents to contact them at Portlaoise Garda Station 057 86 74100 or their local Garda Station.

Walkers are also being warned of the dangers of leaving personal belongings or valuables on view while they are away from their parked cars at remote areas.

Twice last week – at Togher Woods on Saturday and Oakvale Woods, Stradbally the previous Tuesday evening – walkers enjoying the scenic areas returned to their parked cars only to discover that thieves had broken into them.

Gardaí are advising people that they should properly secure their cars and leave no items of value on view and if they intend hiding items, to do so before they make their journey and not in the viewof potential burglars who may be lurking out of sight.
