The Portlaoise St Patrick’s Day parade is back on track after a well attended meeting last Thursday night set plans in motion for what is hoped will be the biggest and most colourful yet.

Organisers say that major plans are afoot with the theme of ‘Fairy Tales and Fables’ expected to give great scope for many exciting floats. The call is now going out to all schools, clubs, community groups and particularly local businesses to take part.

This year the parade and street entertainment will have a much earlier start with the parade commencing at 2pm and the street entertainment along the Main Street and Market Square going on for the previous hour.

A new addition to the day will be a drive through of veteran and vintage cars and they will set off just before the parade and do a complete lap of the town. Vintage car clubs from all around the county are invited to take part and each participant will receive a special memento of the occasion.

Vintage tractors and machinery will take part in the parade itself and there will be special interest in those with the All Ireland Ploughing being held just outside the town this year

Already four marching bands have been confirmed and a call is also going out to bands and individuals that are interested in playing on the bandstands or taking part in the parade. All of the dancing schools in the area are invited to perform on the streets as well.

Following the very positive and productive meeting a committee of over 20 was elected. The committee are chairman Ger Whelan, secretary Patricia Hanley, treasurer Theresa Whelan, PRO Jack Nolan. Anne Duff, Dom Dunne, Clement Herron, Kathleen O’Brien, Anthony Dunne, Pat Flynn, Tony Finlay, Andrew Shaw, Marian Shalloe, Monica Delaney, Mark Martley, Catherine Fitzgerald, Malcolm Smith, Gerry Dillon, Marcus Breslin, PJ Kavanagh.
