Guard injured

A PRISONER involved in an assault on a prison guard was last week sentenced to an additional four months’ jail time.

Thomas Ward, 15 Grangeview Way, Clondalkin, Dublin, was one of a number of prisoners who pushed their way into the Midlands Prison exercise yard on November 16 last year, just as an officer was attempting to close the gate. Inspector Martin Harrington said that the officer was punched and kicked during the incident and his hand got caught in the gate, which left him with bruising and injuries requiring hospital treatment.

Ward has 73 previous convictions and is currently serving an eight-year sentence for dangerous driving causing death.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was not involved in the punching and kicking, but he was part of the group that set upon the guard. She said that Ward had subsequently spent two months in prison without exercise, telephone calls or visitors, due to his part in the incident.

Judge Staines described it as a very serious matter and imposed a four-month sentence, consecutive to the sentence Ward is already serving.
