Hedgecutting causes floods
Landowners are contributing to flooded roads because they are not clearing away hedge cuttings, says Laois County Council.
At a recent Emo area council meeting, two requests to solve flooding problems in Portarlington by clearing drains were approved by Senior engineer Orla Barrett.
However she reminded landowners to clear away the debris after hedgecutting.
“We would again ask local landowners to remove hedge cuttings from the drains as this would greatly reduce the frequency of the drains blocking,” Ms Barrett said.
Clearing of roadside open drains will be done on Ballycarroll lane near Michael Whelehan’s house, and at Inchacooley near Michael Donoher’s and Michael Fitzpatrick’s houses.
Pipes under the road at Inchacooley will also be jetted by the council as part of the cleaning work.
